Weekends at Tej’s
“Life moves so fast. You gotta document the good times, man.” – Big Boi
Coronavirus took everyone by surprise. Nobody were prepared for the disaster that was heading our way, including majority of workplaces. This worked to my advantage as I got to work from home. This pandemic situation helped me spend time with my family, which I very much needed. I was one of the blessed ones who got an opportunity to connect with their loved ones and learn things. Hanging out with my mother and father, helping sister with her studies added on my daily routine. Since we had a lot of time, my dad and I started playing carrom after finding an old, dusty carrom board in the attic. Playing in this old board got on our nerves. So, we decided to buy a new cool custom made carrom board.
My mother thought this was a bad idea, investing so much on a game which we would play for a week before getting bored and throwing it back in the attic. Well, we proved her wrong. We started playing carrom and it was so much fun. We started buying more carrom related things like a light stand, multiple carrom board strikers and type of pawns, a carrom board stand. When we set-up the board at home and start playing, it would look like we were playing in a club’s tournament.
The weekend tradition started like this. One Sunday morning, we decided to play carrom at 7:00 AM. We usually set-up carrom board in the living room, next to our TV and play. We talk a lot when we play, talk about things like movies, politics, nature, life… as we were talking about movies, we decided to watch one while we play. So, we went on Amazon Prime and browsed for an old classic movie which while watching would not bore either one of us. That is when we stumbled up on this wonderful movie. We watched Nayagan, which is basically a Tamil God Father. Watching that movie while playing carrom was on another next level. It was awesome. And on that day, we decided to do this every weekend. We either watch a good movie or turn on some really good music while we play. Now, we just wait for weekends to come, just to chill and play carrom.
My dad plays carrom very well. I am an average player. I used to lose all the matches. My dad, even if he could finish the game easily, would give me chances. I did not know that in the beginning. As I kept playing, he would teach me different tricks and ideas on how to play the game better. Constantly losing to him never crushed my spirit since it was against my dad and also, I was having a great time (mainly cause of the conversations). To me, those conversations were more fun than the game. Now, when I play, I try to focus on both the game as well as the conversation.
So, when I think about it all this now, my relationship with my family, especially with my dad is great. Sharing our thoughts and spending time with each other has helped us to be honest with each other. My parents are more like a friend than a family, which is really cool since I was not able to meet any of my friends due to the pandemic.
